Is it hard to match into a cardiology fellowship? ›

The Cardiology fellowship application process is very competitive and require application materials such as resumes, letters of recommendation, and test results.

Cardiology is considered one of the more competitive medical fellowships to enter with only about 1,199 available fellowship positions, but lots of interest in the field. With a limited number of fellowship positions available each year, the demand for those spots make it a competitive specialty.

Fellowships demand a higher level of commitment and expertise compared to residencies, with increased workload, greater autonomy, and a focused scope of practice. These changes mark a crucial step in a physician's professional development, leading to advanced skills and knowledge in their chosen specialty.

Does the Step 3 Score Matter? Your Step 3 grading will not impact your medical licensing unless you fail because you likely have a residency before you take this Step. If you plan to apply for a fellowship, your Step 3 score matters a bit more because it can bolster your application to help you achieve a better spot.

The percentage of applicants who matched to an open fellowship position were: allergy – 72.0%, cardiology – 66.8%, gastroenterology – 65.5%, and hematology/oncology – 77.5%. The least competitive subspecialties were addiction medicine, geriatrics, infectious disease, and nephrology.

Out of all of cardiology's subspecialties, the highest 2024 salary belongs to cardiovascular surgeons ($911,000). The lowest, on the other hand, belongs to pediatric/adolescent cardiologists ($356,000).

Most participants (70%) were from university programs (Figure 1 ), 79% were men, the median age was 31 to 35 years, the median clinical work hours were 61 to 70 per week, and the time spent on research-related activities was <2 hours/week.

According to the 2022 fellowship match data from the National Resident Match Program, cardiology had an 87% match rate for U.S. medical graduates and a 69% overall match rate. This difficulty in obtaining a fellowship in and of itself poses a large barrier to many applicants.

This year, 1,395 applicants applied to 231 cardiology training programs through the Medical Specialties Matching Program (MSMP) of the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).
