1. Educational background
Education requirements
The Master's program in Data Science and Society offersfour tracks:
Health,Governance,Media,Business. The program's Admissions Committee will not onlyassess if youare admissible to the Master's program, butalsotowhich track(s)within the Master's program you are admissible.
- Eligibility for admission to a track is determined primarily by the field of study (major) of your previous program(s). The Admissions Committee may also take a minor or elective courses into account in the assessment. This is explained in the followingTrack preference form.
In the table below you will findexamples of relevant fields of study per track:
Track | Examples of relevant fields of study |
Health | Cognitive Neuroscience, Psychology, Sociology, or another program focusing on health, wellbeing or healthcare |
Governance | Business Administration, Economics, Human Resource Management, Law, Organization Studies, Political Science, Public Administration, and Sociology |
Media | Business Communication, Communication and Information Sciences, Communication and Marketing, Communication and Media Studies, Communication Science, Design and Technology, Linguistics, and Journalism |
Business | Business Administration, Economics, Finance & Control, Human Resource Management, and Organization Studies |
Please note:
- Other aspects will be taken into account for admission purposes, including the validation of the level of your previous education.
- A degree obtained in one of the fields mentioned above does not guarantee admission. The Admissions Committee will assess each application individually.
- One of the criteria the Admissions Committee assesses applications by, issufficient prior knowledgein the field of methods and techniques of research (statistics, methodology). If prior knowledge in this field is considered insufficient, the Committee may either reject the application or propose a pre-Master’s program.
- The Data Science and Society program is designed for students who completed a non-technical program and wish to learn how to apply data science techniques to the domain in which they built expertise in their previous education. The program is not a good fit for students who have completed a program in which data science techniques have already been extensively covered. A mismatch in that regard may result in rejection of the application.
Also if you have some doubts whether your previous education sufficiently fits with one of the tracks, you are welcome to apply. The Admissions Committee will examine if there is a fit between your previous education and the preferred track. Submitting your application will start this evaluation process.

Within four to sixweeksof the start of this process, you will receive the Admissions Committee's decision by e-mail.
Below are the possible outcomes of your application:
- Admission to the Master's program
This means that you have been admitted directly to the Master’s program for which you have applied.- Your admission may be conditional upon, e.g., your graduation from your current degree. The conditional admission letter will state what you need to do toturn your conditional admission into unconditional admission. Please read it carefully and contact your International Admissions Coordinator if you have any questions.
- After you have met all the conditions of admission, you will receiveyourunconditional admission letter via e-mail.
- Admission to the pre-Master's program
This means that your application was considered for admission to the Master’s program, but the Admissions Committee felt that your academic background was not sufficient to start the Master’s program directly. HOWEVER, it is considered that the pre-Master's program would prepare you sufficiently to begin the Master’s program in the next intake, once you have successfully completed thepre-Master’s courses.- If you have received admission to the pre-Master's program, your application for the Master’s program will be cancelled in Studielink and you mustregister inStudielinkfor the pre-Master’s program.
- As soon as you have registered in Studielink, you will be asked toapply again via OSIRIS Aanmeld. You must upload your Conditional Admission Letter in addition to the other documents requested. Please note: you can use the same documents which you have uploaded for your Master's application.
- Rejection
This means that the Admissions Committee considers your academic background to be unsuitable for admission to either our Master's or pre-Master's program. Your registration in Studielink will be cancelled.
